Celebration of Life Venues Near Rochester, NY: Planning a Gathering That Honors Them

Published June 29th, 2026 by Chef's Event Center

When a family loses someone, the last thing anyone wants to think about is logistics. Yet within a day or two, somebody has to answer a very practical question: where does everyone go after the service? For families across Rochester and Monroe County, that gathering matters more than they expect. It is where the stories come out, where the grandchildren finally meet the coworkers, and where a hard day softens into something warmer.

Chef's Event Center & Party House in Spencerport, NY, about 20 minutes from downtown Rochester, hosts funeral luncheons and celebrations of life on 10 private acres. This is a guide to planning one without adding weight to a week that is already heavy.

We can help on short notice: Call (585) 352-3300 or contact us and we will walk you through it.

Why Families Move the Gathering Out of the House

The default is to host at home, and for a small group that works. For thirty, fifty, or a hundred and fifty people it stops working quickly. Someone ends up in the kitchen the entire time instead of sitting with family. Parking fills the street. There is nowhere for older relatives to sit. And at the end of the night, the people grieving the most are the ones washing dishes.

Moving the gathering to a venue removes all of that. You arrive, your guests are fed, and when it is over you leave. Nobody in your family works that afternoon.

What a Luncheon Actually Needs

  • Seating for everyone at once. People should not be standing with a plate looking for a chair.
  • A room that is easy to reach. Older guests, mobility aids, and a short walk from the parking lot.
  • Food that arrives without anyone hosting it. No trays to refill, no coffee to start.
  • Privacy. A grieving family should not be sharing a room with a birthday party.

One Event at a Time, Which Matters More Here Than Anywhere

We book one event at a time. For a wedding that is a nice feature. For a celebration of life it is closer to essential. There is no other party in the building, no competing music through a wall, no strangers in the hallway while your family says goodbye. The banquet hall seats up to 325, and it can be laid out just as comfortably for forty.

If the weather is decent, the grounds give people somewhere to walk. The gardens, the pond, and the deck end up being where the quieter conversations happen, and families tell us afterward that it made a difference.

The Food Is Handled Here

Catering is in house through Chef's Catering, which means one phone call covers the room, the meal, the coffee, and the staff. For a funeral luncheon we usually recommend something simple and familiar rather than elaborate: a buffet that lets people go up when they are ready, hot options that hold well as guests arrive at different times, and plenty of coffee. You can look through the sample menus, but honestly, most families tell us what the person who died would have wanted and we build from there.

Dietary needs are planned in advance rather than improvised. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and allergy considerations are all normal requests and we handle them quietly.

"The staff and event planner at Chef's catering were extremely professional and helped make our day both organized and amazing . The food was incredible and all staff ensured each guest was cared for." - Kelly & Scott

Planning on a Compressed Timeline

Most events here are booked months out. Funeral luncheons are not, and we know that. Families usually call us within a few days of the service, sometimes the day before. Here is what we need to move fast:

  • The date and rough time. Usually immediately following the service.
  • A guest estimate. A range is fine. We would rather plan for a few extra than run short.
  • Any dietary needs you already know about.
  • Whether you want a space for photos, a slideshow, or a microphone for anyone who wants to speak.

That is enough to hold a date. Everything else can be settled in a single conversation.

Need a date soon? Reach out here and we will tell you right away what is open.

Celebrations of Life Are Not Always Somber

More families are choosing to do something other than a traditional luncheon. We have hosted gatherings built around someone's favorite meal, afternoons with a slideshow running and a full bar open, and receptions that looked a lot more like a party than a service. That is a legitimate choice and we are comfortable with it. If the person you are honoring would have hated a quiet room, you do not have to have one.

Things Families Add

  • A photo table or memory board near the entrance where people gather first.
  • A slideshow running through the afternoon.
  • An open microphone for anyone who wants to say something.
  • A signature drink or dish that belonged to them.

Getting Here

We are at 1875 North Union Street, Spencerport, NY 14559, an easy drive from Rochester, Greece, Brockport, Hilton, Chili, and Churchville, with free parking on site and a short, flat walk to the door. For families coming straight from a service in the city, it is roughly 20 to 25 minutes.

You can read more on our funeral luncheons and celebrations of life page, or just call. We have done this many times and we can take most of it off your hands.

When you are ready, get in touch or call (585) 352-3300. We will handle the rest.
